It’s been a while since fans have seen Vikram on the big screen. Although Mahaan, his film with director Karthik Subbaraj was released on Amazon Prime Video in February, the gangster drama did not get a theatrical release. Now, fans have swarmed theaters for Cobra, Vikram’s first theatrical release since Kadaaram Kondaan (2019), making it one of the top four Tamil films to have a grand opening in 2022.

According to trade analysts, the film is the fourth biggest debut film from Tamil Nadu while Valimai, Beast and Vikram occupy the top three positions in the same order. The film is also doing well in overseas markets like Malaysia. When contacted, one of the industry trackers said the exact number had yet to be revealed.

Meanwhile, the creators decided to cut 20 minutes from Cobra after listening to feedback from critics and audiences. The film, which is approximately three hours in length, has been criticized as convoluted and unnecessarily long. The film has so far only received mixed reviews from critics, which may affect its box office collection in the coming days.

Indian Express’ Manoj Kumar gave the film two stars and wrote, “A film about a globe-trotting assassin with a deep fascination with cosplay would be a lot of fun to watch if done right. After increasing the initial excitement, the film sinks. And he sinks even more after the interval and he never recovers his ground even in the climax.

Directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, Cobra also has KGF fame’s Srinidhi Shetty, Mrinalini Ravi and former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan in key roles. Vikram plays the role of a genius mathematician. The film has music by AR Rahman.
