In conjunction with Malaysia’s Independence Day on August 31, 2021, klpac will be posting an archival recording of “TUNKU The Musical” on YouTube free to the public from 12 noon on August 31, 2021 until midnight on the 12th. September 2021.
Original creation by director Joe Hasham OAM for Malaysia’s 50th anniversary celebrations, it seems fitting to revisit this production now as Malaysia’s future hangs in everyone’s mind and how we come out of this catastrophic year.
“TUNKU The Musical”, written by Lim Chuang Yik and Teng Ky-Gan, takes you on a 50-year musical journey from Merdeka Day through the Singapore-Malaysia separation, the riots of 1969 and the year it was staged, 2007. The hit musical has all the color, drama, excitement, anticipation, grief, sorrow and uncertainty of that fateful Saturday morning of August 31, 1957, when the shouts of “Merdeka!” echoed across the country. Today, it reminds Malaysians to keep hope, stand united, and use their voices to build a future Malaysia deserves.
“TUNKU The Musical” was first presented in 2007 by the Petra Foundation and co-sponsored by CELCOM and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage. The musical came to life thanks to a dream team consisting of Mervyn Peters as Music Director, Joseph Gonzales as Choreographer, Dominique Devorsine as Costume Designer, Paul Loosley as Production Designer and Mac Chan as as a lighting designer.
“TUNKU The Musical” is part of the WFH @ klpac (Watch from Home) series as it suffers its third lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has cost it more than RM 2 million in losses. Although the screening is free to the public, donations are welcome via www.klpac.org/donations/.
