Hello summer.
Lake tells us more about her first foray into the swimwear market.
Felicity Carter: Tell us about the collection?
Sharon Lake: The Adina Reay Swimwear collection includes four very different collections, all designed specifically for sizes 28DD to 38G and featuring both bikinis and one-piece styles:
- the Capri collection offers an exposed yarn detail and a plunging neckline that is so flattering for larger busts. Large bows on the shoulder draw the eye upwards and beautifully balance the proportions of the body.
- the Santorini swimsuit is an elegant statement designer, with a deep ruffle that drapes elegantly from the shoulder. The leg line of this suit has been carefully considered to create the most flattering fit for all body types.
- the Antigua The collection has a peplum waistband detail that kicks the hips for the perfect hourglass figure.
- Finally, the malibu mixes open mesh with cutout opaque panels to create the illusion of big curves and offers just a small glimpse of the skin.
FC: How long has the line been in preparation?
SL: We started working on this collection more than three years ago. This long period of development has allowed us to bring new swimwear silhouettes, giving our customers the excitement they have come to know and love in our lingerie but with all the support needed to fit up to ‘at 38G. We’ve systematically addressed the frustrations women experience with swimwear: opacity, unflattering buttocks, lack of tummy support (or – just as bad – overly restrictive tummy support), need to be a certain age or certain shape to fit the style. It’s these thoughtful details that make this collection stand out for us.
FC: How would you sum up the aesthetics of the collection?
SL: Our DD to G swimsuits are a timeless capsule of remarkably chic and stylish pieces that just so happen to make any shape you have that little bit better. As an all-female company, our goal with this collection was to create pieces that would actually feel comfortable to wear and look great on everyone.
FC: Who is your client?
SL: Adina Reay swimsuits are designed specifically to fit and flatter larger cup sizes: we go from 28DD to 38G. Our customers love that with Adina Reay they can finally wear striking silhouettes, knowing that the support they need is built in but not the main focus. Because we’re experts in flattering feminine curves, they love how our suits’ cut brings out the best in their figure. The garment works for them, not the other way around!
FC: What is the production process?
SL: We are proudly made in Britain. We have recently been able to set up a production process that allows us to manufacture just the quantities needed, avoiding the waste associated with overproduction. It’s the opposite of fast fashion and one that allows us to focus on sustainable design rather than trends.
FC: What is your favorite and why?
SL: We love the drama of the Santorini swimsuit, and it perfectly encapsulates what Adina Reay is all about: slip-on elegance with support in all the right places!
