Signature Levitt Summer Camp Shines a Light on Urban Creative Arts in Downtown Dayton

“We are thrilled to be returning to Levitt Pavilion Dayton for the second year of camp,” echoed the Sierra Leone poet of Signature Educational Solutions, who serves as co-director of the camp with her husband, Robert N. Owens. “The students felt so connected last year and also felt so safe even though the camp was outdoors. There aren’t many city camps in this area where students can interact with the city itself, travel to, and have interactions at places like the Dayton Metro Library and The Hub at the Dayton Arcade. Downtown Dayton was the perfect backdrop, the perfect muse, for the students.

Leone, Governor’s Award winner and president and artistic director of the OFP Theater Company, said this year’s camp will have a particular focus on storytelling while offering more apprentice-style instruction with Levitt Pavilion Dayton.

“We want to provide more hands-on experiences,” Leone said. “Students will see firsthand the process of what it takes to put on a concert. For any young person who wants to get into music production, it will be important to work side by side with these professionals.

As places are limited, students are encouraged to register now. Teachers are also needed. Parent and student orientation will take place on Tuesday, June 14.

“The importance of this year’s camp is to keep students connected, to keep them imaginative, focused and focused on what it means to develop and perfect their own craft,” Leone said. “Throughout the school year, students study history, math, civics and other subjects, but there is never a lesson focused on students studying themselves and they are. Beyond 2022, it is important that students know who they are and who they are becoming. It’s imperative for them to really continue to hone their authentic voice. We are preparing the next generation with this camp.
