Wellcome Collection and Profile Books have arrived The book of phobias and manias: a history of the world in 99 obsessions by Kate Summerscale.
Worldwide rights, including audio, were acquired by Georgia Garrett’s Wellcome Collection publisher Fran Barrie from RCW.
Described as a “fascinating compendium of our deepest fears and obsessions”, the book shows how certain phobias have shaped people from the Middle Ages to the present day. It will be released in the UK on October 6 and is one of Profile’s main non-fiction titles for Fall 2022.
The rights have already been sold in 10 territories with Penguin Press Publishing in the United States, CTPH in China, Otherwise in France, Patakis in Greece, UTET in Italy, Hankyoreh in Korea, Filia in Poland, Dusbaz in Turkey and Blackie Books in Spain .
“No one could write this gripping story like Kate Summerscale – tracing how our fears and fixations echo the shocks of our own lives and our collective history,” Barrie said. “She has a knack for revealing the universal through our strangeness to ourselves, evident throughout this brilliant and deeply human book.”
Previously published by Bloomsbury, Summerscale is the number one best-selling author Mr. Whicher’s suspicions, winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction 2008 and the Galaxy British Book of the Year Award. It was a Richard & Judy Book Club pick and adapted into a major ITV drama. His latest book, The Haunting of Alma Fieldingwas shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize.
