Archimedes Li of Westview High School and Vayun Shekhar of Stone Ranch Elementary School received Excellence Awards in the 2021-22 PTA Reflections National Art Competition for their musical compositions.
The awards recognize creative interpretations of this year’s theme, “I will change the world into…” in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. as well as a special division of artists. The two Poway Unified School District winners were recognized in the Music Composition category for their original compositions: Li for “Dialectic” and Shekhar for “Robotic Rhythm.”
As national award recipients, they will receive a medallion, a $200 scholarship, and their work will be featured in PTA national celebrations and exhibits.
“The National PTA has a long-standing commitment to arts education, and it is a top priority of our association to ensure that all children have access to arts programs and classes,” said Nathan R. Monell. , executive director of the National PTA.
Additionally, Li, Shekhar, and fellow PUSD student Zoey Lestyk of Westview High won merit awards at the California State PTA Reflections Program, qualifying them for the national competition. Lestyk’s painting, “Just Do It,” won the award in the Visual Arts category.
PTAs at Poway Unified school sites had the opportunity to nominate their students’ work for district-level recognition with the Palomar PTA Council. These winners were then passed from Palomar Council to the PTA’s 9th District, which serves San Diego and Imperial Counties, and from there the winners were sent to the state level for judging.
